NEM-3 Proposed Decision & How It May Impact Your Utility Bill

As you may have heard in the news, PG&E, SCE, SDGE & the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued a Proposed Decision (PD) that could have a big impact on the solar industry and the current Net Energy Metering (NEM) program if passed. While we wait for a final NEM-3 decision that could be issued as early as January 27, 2022, here are a few of the potential impacts the decision could have on your utility bill when you go solar.

With the looming possibility that NEM-3 will have a negative impact on your savings potential, there is a strong economic incentive to go solar now and lock in grandfathering protections. While we don’t know when the proposed decision will be finalized, the current recommendation is to have contracts signed and applications prior to the  final decision. Our priority at Solar Technologies is to help you secure the best solar rates possible with your local utility and continue to provide a cleaner, greener future for generations to come.

Here are answers to some of the most common questions we’ve received:

What is NEM-3?
If passed as proposed, NEM-3 will add a fee to the utility bills of California homeowners with solar. This fee is being proposed by the utilities for “grid access” on top of reducing the export credit they are required to pay you for the excess energy your solar system generates.

How does this impact you?
The CPUC is expected to vote to finalize the proposed NEM-3 decision on January 27, 2022 with implementation expected to follow within a few short months. By locking in your solar rate now with an NEM-2 status, you could see additional savings each month.

What can you do to help?
If you sign the online solar petition today, you can help influence California policymakers to allow future homeowners like yourself to receive the financial benefits of solar power and continue to contribute to a cleaner future for generations to come.

Due to the uncertainty of the upcoming decisions and timelines, we strongly recommend that residential customers who are interested in solar get in our installation queue as soon as possible. Give us a call or reach out today to get started and learn more about NEM-3.
