California is taking in leaps and bounds towards becoming the first state to require solar panels on newly constructed homes.
Recently the California Energy Commission voted 5-0 to mandate the installation of solar panels on residential buildings up to three stories tall. This would be regulated and put into effect by the year 2020.
This is a major step in the right direction of sustainable energy. Although this will add to the building costs of future California homes, it is being met with acceptance by home builders, California leaders, and solar advocates.
Currently, solar power makes up less than 2% of U.S. Electricity output, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. “It is rising because of large solar farms as well as rooftop solar arrays on homes and businesses” – Wall Street Journal
