Solar Technologies Receives Green Business Certification

The Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program recognizes local solar power installer for environmental business operations.

Solar Technologies announces recognition by the Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program. The largest local, independently owned, solar power installer in the area, Solar Technologies was awarded certification by the City of Santa Cruz for its environmental business efforts in the community.

The Monterey Bay Area Green Business Program rewards businesses and government agencies that operate in an environmentally responsible way. To be certified "green," participants must be in compliance with all regulations and meet or exceed program standards for conserving resources, preventing pollution, and minimizing waste.

In business since 1998 and owned by Roger DeNault, Solar Technologies is known for environmental solutions by the nature of its business of providing clean energy alternatives. You may have seen Roger driving around town in his electric car, powered by two large solar panels on the top. Solar Technologies is the first solar company to be certified in the Green Business Program for Santa Cruz County.

“The certification process was another means to take inventory of our own consumption and see where improvements could be made. It was a natural progression for the company. We are always looking for ways to reduce our impact on the planet.  As a solar company, we need to ‘walk our own talk’,” explained DeNault.

Before being considered for certification, the company made many changes in its office operations to become environmentally responsible, including the use of recycled papers and materials to minimize waste and by using natural cleaning products to reduce the impact of chemical toxins.

When the company moved to its new location at 619 Soquel Avenue, across from Shopper’s Corner, Solar Technologies made a concerted effort to use recycled materials during the renovation of the office facilities. The company installed recycled and recyclable carpet, used low VOC paint on the walls, and placed recycled, sustainably farmed hickory on the lobby floor.

The certification process enhanced the company’s understanding of additional measures to support a culture of resource conservation. Solar Technologies set about finding ways to improve resource efficiency, including cleaning and servicing the HVAC system in the facility and installing a programmable thermostat to minimize energy use. A storage area was dedicated for spent batteries, used light bulbs, and discarded electronic items to be taken to a recycling center. Signs were posted around the premises as friendly reminders to employees to participate in the conservation process, and they are encouraged to volunteer in the community in related activities.
