LEED® Certification

What is LEED Certification?

LEED® stands for The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ . The U.S. Green Building Council developed a set of standards that building owners and operators use to construct or convert conventional buildings into sustainable green high performance buildings. The mission of the U.S. Green Building Council is to improve the quality of life for people by using sustainable practices.

The U.S. Green Building Council has developed checklists for various building types and projects.
Here is the LEED checklist for existing buildings. For further information visit the U.S. Green Building Council website.

A building owner or operator needs to earn points toward their LEED rating by using the various energy efficiency business processes and operating procedures listsed in the checklists.

For example, the LEED point rating system for existing buildings is as follows:

Certified      34 - 42 points
Silver           43 - 50 points
Gold             51 - 67 points
Platinum     68 - 92 points

Optimizing energy efficiency practices can earn you from 1-15 points towards your rating.
Renewable energy, such as a solar power system can earn you from 1-4 points depending on how much your electric usage is offset by renewable energy.
